Is it all doom and gloom or are things looking up?
Posted On 04/03/2009 13:25:58

Howdy good people of the blog reading kind.

It’s been a busy few months and I keep trying to kick my behind into shape and write another blog, so hear it is.

It’s another year and I am trying to suss a new game plan to get my music out to the masses and the people who might want to put some real cash behind it. There seems to be plenty interest, so hopefully I am the right track with my music.

The dark side

Given the current state of the ‘financial climate’ no one seems to give two hoots at gigs anymore or wants to PAY for music (Shocking I know, who’d have thought that many people would want stuff for FREE?)

Many venues seem to be about making the promoters money and not a lot else. Often the bands that can bring the most mates to gigs get the good slots to play, meanwhile the humble solo act get naff all. (I am not bitter though –honest – just more determined) This is part of the reason why I am playing less gigs, but being more choosey which is better for my sanity I think; -P

I have heard sooooo many industry folk talking about how great the Internet can be and how easy it is to record your music and get it out there. Well I think that there is a flip side to that. In my humble opinion the market place has become flooded with music. While I LOVE THIS, I also HATE THIS. A&R people have gotten very lazy. They surf the Internet looking for the ‘next big thing’. No one seems to be going to gigs and it is SOOOOO frustrating. I mean, how can you be ‘the next big thing’ if you can’t cut it Live??? The mind boggles.

Somewhat ironically, I get paid to sing other peoples songs in bars, clubs and restaurants which, if ya think about it is totally backwards. Thankfully this means I get to pay my bills and eat food ;-)

Session singing is pretty pointless, as most of the small labels/DJs don’t want to pay ya OR can only pay when royalties come in – which is usually 12 months or more later. Because of the state of the industry this usually means I get diddly squat. The artist is always the last in line to get paid so when the distributors go bust (which is happening all the time) the royalties go PUFF into the air, low and behold – no money. It is all doom and gloom at the moment. Well it seems that way doesn’t it?

The force is with me - honest

Ok, so I have had a good old rant about many of the bad things so here where the mood of this blog changes.

Work is pretty quiet at the moment, which means I am getting time to write a load of new tunes.

I have felt ‘many pennies dropping’ over the last few months and ‘creatively’ things are falling into place FINALLY.

I played at the BBC again last night. It used to be Russell Walker Tuesday turns but Russell has moved onto to new pastures. The new chap holding the rains is Shourjo Sarkar's and a nice chap he is too. We talked about random subjects like, who is your newest friend (There was a text in and phone in about this). Shourjo played a sound bite from a riverbank of a guy called David Pilgrim who is crazy about fishing. It was all a little strange, but in a nice way. I managed to play 3 songs, which lets face it, is why I headed to Leeds in the first place. I am trying to get hold of an mp3 so if you missed the show so watch this space and I will see what I can do.

I have played at the Leeds BBC several times and never remember to get any snapshots, so this time I did – YAY ME, well Kate (The producer) who was kind enough to work my camera phone.

And the winner is…

I was in Glasgow last week playing a very EXCLUSIVE GIG with some lovely peeps.

It was a bit of a busy week to say the least. I took Bass player/studio engineer ‘Mon’ to the airport – He has moved to Canada  (and who can blame him). This of course meant a few glasses of red wine the evening before and very little sleep. Gig day so the two blokes from DARNELL (Darren and Junior) arrived at my house and I headed over Manchester to pick guitarist Pete up then it was onward to Scotland. Nearly 5 hours later (and a couple wee breaks) we arrived in bonnie Glasgow. Ian Morrow’s studio is rather impressive. All around the walls were platinum disks, many of which were from albums I had listened to.

Sound check, chitchat, practicing songs and a brew, then we headed to a local restaurant where there was a camera crew set up. We each did a 10 min chat in camera, which was pretty chilled. I am sure the footage will be sorted soon enough.

Anyhoooo the gig itself was in the HOUSE OF ROCK STUDIOS. Lights, 3 (hi definition) camera guys, stage, candles and lungs filled with dry ice. The gig was fun but nerve wrecking. Pete played electric guitar and as usual, was fantastic. We only had time for 3 songs, which were ‘No fool to this game’, I can’t cry anymore’ and ‘Goodtime girl’. There were a number of journalists there including a chap from The Guardian and The Daily Express plus some more I have forgotten about. So ya get the general idea?

New project

I am gearing up to record the next project this month. As I said earlier, I have been writing and recording loads of new demos and I feel that everything is falling into place.

I will try my best to keep you updated, maybe some video blogs would be easier, although I do feel rather strange talking to a little handy cam like it’s my new best friend.

A friend of mine called John recently introduced me to a great band called THE JERZEY STREET BAND (see my top friends). We have talked about doing some writing together so watch this space.

GOODTIME GIRL video is getting there. Craig (from http://www.cd-inc.co.uk/) has sent me a few clips. It’s a lot of work, which is why it is taking so bloody long. They have been very supportive of me since I met them a few years back, they are also behind the artwork and duplication of ‘Paint the sky’ and www.donnamariemusic.co.uk.

Well I guess I should get back to the studio. Times a waistin’ and I am not getting any younger LOL

(Which reminds me, I had a lovely surprise Birthday meal with some friends in Manchester on Saturday, sneeeeeeky little monkeys!)

TWENTYONE AGAIN! Yes, it’s true!

Tooooooooooodles for now lovely Kerchoonerz

PS, I am sure I have left loads out, but just like an Oscar speech, I ran out of time, and lets face it - too much text is boring

I am trying to suss out how to place images into blogs via HTML, it ain't working, it's probably me being a baboon !

Hya lovely Kerchooner'z. Hope you had a great weekend!

Hya lovely Kerchooner'z. Hope you had a great weekend!

I wanted to invite you to check out a new tune. I have been writing and working on new songs the last coupla' weeks.

I recorded the vocals and did a little headphone mix late last night of a new song called 'LET THE FEELING WASH OVER ME'. It’s partially inspired by ‘The credit crunch’. I think we all know we are in a recession so why does the news reports have to keep on telling us how screwed we all are? I personally think this kind of reporting is not making things any easier. It’s causing a knock on effect and scaring people even more than they are! It’s a similar thing to FUEL SHORTAGE. We are asked not to panic buy, so what do we do? We go and stock up so we can get about in the car, which CAUSES A SHORTAGE! Anyhoo, that’s my little ten pence worth!

This song features Acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer keyboard, Hammond, Electric guitar, Bass, Vocals, BVs and a simple drumbeat courtesy of yours truly. I have just drafted a wonderful pedal steel player called ALAN COOK playing on some of the new songs too. Watch this space!

I would love to know what you think, so please drop me a comment onto my profile page and let me know

Let the feeling wash over me

       The years roll by

And I see myself in the mirror tonight

It's hard to recognize

The girl staring back at me

          Another line on my face

But I feel younger than when I was only 21

When I believed in romance

And happy endings too

And I feel the fear within me as I look upon my life

And how things might be

When all we hear on the news is how screwed we all are

It’s enough to make me drink myself to sleep

I wanna’ run just as far as I can

So I can make a little sense of it then

No matter what life brings

I’ll just take it on the chin and close my eyes

And let the feeling wash over me

I must be true to myself

And find a little peace of mind somehow

Coz there’s a part of me knows

It won’t be too long now

And I’ve struggled by myself

There must be so much more to life than this

So I open my eyes

And see the world is new

So I look over my shoulder

And I take another glance

Just how things may be

If all we hear on the news is how screwed we all are

It’s enough to make me drink myself to sleep

I wanna’ run just as far as I can

So I can make a little sense of it then

No matter what life brings

I’ll just take it on the chin and close my eyes

And let the feeling wash over me

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

So let the feeling

Let the feeling yeah

It never rains, it only pours !
Posted On 15/11/2008 15:00:08

It never rains, it only pours !Hya Kerchooner'z

Hope all is well.

Sorry for the lack of contact/update lately I've had a couple of rubbish weeks, bad new etc.... It never rains it only pours hey?

Anyhooo all that aside I have finished the latest EP which is available to download using this link

KERCHOONZ.COM

In a nutshell it's a new music/networking site. You have to join, but then you can download the music for FREE. I will personally be uploading lots of EXCLUSIVE TRACKS on Kerchoonz where you will also be able to DOWNLOAD FOR FREE ! It's the way forward, I tell thee! Goodtime girl is doing really well on FEATURED MUSIC rotation!

On another note, I will back in the studio with the band sometime next week or so, expect some more rocking tunez very soon. 2009 is gonna be a busy year for me and my music. USA is a'calling to record the album! I will be playing some dates out there too. I am hoping to play a few dates in EUROPE, Paris is a cert (date and venue TBC) Germany, Holland with any luck and BELGIUM (If I don't play there I know a few people who will never let me hear the end of it LOL....PLUS there is the chocolate hehehe

Last Sunday (9th nov 08) I headed to
Birmingham NEC and played a little acoustic set on one of the stages. It was the MUSIC LIVE event. Time flew by, so much to see. Pete (Mason), Mon (Bass) and a friend Lucy also headed up with me. We checked out some more of the new ADAM BLACK guitars which were wicked. Pete was like a child at christmas, well ok so was I. I should hopefully be getting my hands on the JA-20 Archtop (all going well) and hopefully the 0-42 acoustic. Unfortunately my Electric Hydra AB guitar is poorly, so I am without it until it gets fixed so I am back to using my Tele on the weekends which ain't no bad thing, but it doesn't have that GRRRRRR sound the Adam BlackASBO pick'ups have.

One of the
Audio-Technica guys expressed an interest in a possible endorsement with them so we shall see how that goes. Great mics ;-)

Hmmmm i should stop myself doing the tech talk...i am such a GEEK ;-P

Next week I am playing about an hour/acoustic set at
BAR BABYLON @ 49 - 51 Market Place Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire DN35 8LY
Opening for me is the wonderful Jenny Beck http://www.myspace.com/jennybeck
I am really looking forward to seeing Jenny play too.

Anyhooooo, I better get an hours chill out before I head out tonight. Hasslingdon tonight, Crewe Sat, Bury Sunday....it's all go.

Personally it's been a really crappy week, musically it's not been too bad at all.

Ohh....yeh, I am playing in a blues band as well as my solo stuff, and the covers on the weekend. Saves being bored hey?

Toooooodles for now Kerchooner'z

All roads lead here EP now on Kerchoonz - DOWNLOADS!
Posted On 07/11/2008 17:38:39

Hya Kerchoonzer

New EP is now available on KERCHOONZ. It features 4 new songs available for download. I know a number of you have joined Kerchoonz so that you can download this EP so I hope you like it. It's a pretty stripped down production.

There is no band involved on this EP as I wanted to put something together to bridge the gap between THIS WORLD mini album and my fourth coming debut album which will be out in 2009.

It features

12 strings acoustic guitar

Electric guitar

6 string acoustic guitar

Bass guitar

Mandolin

Keyboard

Hand percussion

All played by myself, mixed and produced in my little home studio.

I will be uploading new demo's from time to time, so please keep in touch. You can vote for my songs to be featured in the Kerchoonz chart and also add them to your player.
