The NFL and NFLPA have entered a pivotal period in their $9 billion labor dispute that, with a settlement, could come to an end at a hotel near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport next week. Both sides could share the results with chief magistrate Arthur J. Boylan, the court-appointed mediator, with whom they are scheduled to meet next Tuesday in Minneapolis. In May, the NFL announced they would hold a special league meeting on July 21 in Atlanta. ESPN, citing sources familiar with the state of negotiations, reported Monday that the two sides are targeting the Atlanta meeting to ratify the prospective collective bargaining agreement. The NFL has not missed any games since the 1987 labor dispute. The owners locked out the players on March 11, and the players’ union decertified and filed an antitrust lawsuit. The owners scored a major victory and gained additional negotiating leverage when the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled last week that a U.S. District Court could not Air Kukini stop the league from locking out players. The decision vacated an April 25 decision by the lower court that temporarily lifted the lockout because players were determined to have suffered irreparable harm.
